Here's a short review of the Holiday Inn On-the-Bay for Frank and anyone else thinking about cruising out of San Diego.

The hotel is old and is made up of three bldgs. It has a limited number of water view rooms which were gone, and I had made reservations about two months in advance. So if you want a bay view, reserve well ahead of your cruise.

We were in the South Tower. The room was not huge, but certainly serviceable. All the rooms have balconies and ours had a city view. I could have looked at it for hours and hours. There were plenty of other hotels from which to choose. For those who are flush financially and requiring spiffier accommodations, I could see Marriott, Hyatt, and W Hotels from my balcony. All are very close to the cruise terminal, but the Holiday Inn is the only one across the street.

The food at the HI's main restaurant is awful, including the coffee, so save your breakfast Cholesterol count and have a bowl of oatmeal and an o.j. at Hazelwood's in the South Tower. Oh, and the coffee was better, too. You can eat outside if you want and have a view of the San Diego Bay. Carnival's Elation was in port Friday morning. We had lunch and a very good dinner at Anthony's Fish Grotto across the street. They've been in business since 1947. Ruth's Chris Steakhouse is on the HI property, and we had dinner there the first night.

Since so many people ask how far the airport is from the city, it's practically right in the city. It's a mile and a half from the HI. I've never been to the S.D. airport, but I suspect you can see the cruise terminal from there.

You will find a one night pre-cruise stay at the Holiday Inn on-the-Bay will do just fine. The location is terrific and there's scads to do in San Diego. The hotel is clean, has a pool, a restaurant and bar, and the staff is friendly. It's just not a place I'd want to go for a resort kind of trip. After two nights, I was happy to go home.

Judy
